I have the pleasure and honor to give this year’s Torrance Lecture at the University of Georgia Mary Frances Early College of Education on December 8 at 4:30-6:30pm ET.
The Center for Creativity and Talent Development, annually brings scholars and creative artists to UGA to discuss issues related to creativity. It was established in 1985 to honor Torrance, a native Georgian and pioneer in research on the identification and development of creative potential.
The 2020 Torrance Lecture: FROM FIELD by Kyna Leski
Lecture abstract: Three capacities that are often associated with artists: sensibility, imagination and improvisation—are agents of field. Chefs, tailors and wood workers are known for their sensibility; but sensibility is also at work when a surgeon senses feedback from a scalpel and a community organizer “reads the room.”
Besides imagination being associated with play, children and illustrators; envisioning another reality gives courage in fighting oppression. Comics, jazz musicians and actors are great at improv. When plans are upturned in times of crisis, improvisation is necessary.
These capacities are what engage and draw together “field.” Field permeates and holds together relevant content and is elicited from the world to witness and author. Field is conduction, recognition, and connection that pulls the mind towards discovery and intention.
